Maggie Walker Public Art Sculpture

We were about half way through our delicious buffet lunch when the speakers came out. Immediately they told us we would be enjoying a 13 minute film.
The film began with a quote about how using public art can be a powerful tool for our communities. In Richmond, Virginia a new monument was placed for a civil rights hero, Maggie Walker. She was the daughter of a freed slave and the first African American to start a bank and she also had a passion for educating people on finances.
They explained how there was a lot of controversy over where to locate the monument "anything to obstruct Maggie Walker came out but we just kept pushing forward." The film ended with the community celebrating the unveiling of the civil rights hero monument. One community member stated "she represents social equality progress in my community."  Toby Mendez, the sculptor, commented "the statue is not about the past...monuments make this moment.  It tells the story for generations and generations."
After the film, the sculptor, Toby Mendez, and the video producer, Daniela Parezfrias, talked about the impact of the process on the community and how listening to the community helped create this work of art for everyone to enjoy.
